That man was Tom Mower Sr. – an industrial chemist, entrepreneur, scientist and product formulator who spent his career researching new discoveries and looking for ways to create products that could improve people’s lives. What began as a small discovery in a laboratory would eventually become a worldwide mission – the Mower Mission. Today, that mission continues through Sisel International.
Where the Mission Began
Tom Mower recalls: “I was an industrial chemist making industrial chemicals, always researching for new discoveries.” In the process of his work, Tom encountered an unexpected discovery during skin-cancer research. Researchers were applying ointments to men’s scalps in an attempt to arrest skin cancer – the treatment didn’t work for the cancer, but hair began to grow instead. Tom discovered the effect had nothing to do with the cancer agent itself; it was a cosmetic emulsifier that dissolved the hormone associated with hair loss.
The discovery became personal when Tom’s wife, Dee Mower, successfully used the product after their own son experienced early baldness. Word quickly spread – “people started knocking on our door,” Dee recalls, “from all over the neighbourhood,” Tom adds. Some of the people who came to the Mowers were network marketers who wanted to take the product to their companies. As Tom put it, “build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.”
The Discovery That Started the Mission
The Mowers’ quest to create safer, effective products began with something as ordinary as shampoo. When Tom began examining the ingredients closely, what he found shocked him – substances he recognised from industrial applications, the same things used in garage floor cleaner and slaughterhouse degreaser. He questioned why ingredients he regarded as harsh industrial chemicals were being used in products people applied directly to their skin and hair.
His response wasn’t simply to complain about the problem – he decided to solve it. Tom reformulated a shampoo without the ingredients he considered potentially harmful. It wasn’t easy; the personal-care industry had been built around many of these ingredients, and creating effective alternatives required real research, experimentation and innovation. But this was the beginning of something much larger – the Mowers weren’t simply interested in creating another product, they wanted to discover whether everyday products could be made safer without sacrificing effectiveness.
From Shampoo to a Much Bigger Mission
As the Mowers’ business grew, so did Tom’s desire to investigate other personal-care products. The next target was wrinkle creams. Dee recalls the ingredients being so harmful that they wouldn’t allow their own workers at the plant to get them on their skin. Instead of accepting the status quo, Tom began an exhaustive programme of scientific research – conducting worldwide research, searching for discoveries that could provide safer, more effective alternatives.
The Search for Better Science
During this research, Tom discovered an essential oil in South America, derived from a seed that grew only in the Andes. The native population had reportedly used it for thousands of years to treat skin ulcers and burns, with wounds healing rapidly and virtually scar-free. The University of Concepcion in Chile was using the ingredient in clinical studies involving burn victims, and one unexpected observation from those studies was that as burns healed, wrinkles were also being significantly reduced.
For Tom, this discovery represented something much bigger than a single ingredient – it reinforced his belief that there was an enormous amount of scientific research and natural knowledge that had yet to make its way into mainstream products. Tom Mower had found his calling, and that calling became the driving force behind what would become the Mower Mission.
The Birth of Neways
The first company built around this philosophy was originally called Images and Attitudes. Founded by Tom and Leslie D. Mower in 1987, the company was renamed Neways in 1992. The philosophy was simple but ambitious: find potentially harmful ingredients, research better alternatives, and create products people could use with greater confidence. That approach became fundamental to Neways and attracted a large following – Tom’s background in industrial chemicals gave him a unique perspective on questioning conventional formulations rather than simply accepting them.
A Mission Bigger Than Products
The Mower Mission was never intended to be only about selling products. At its heart was a desire to inform, educate and empower people – the belief that people should know what’s in the products they use, that the ingredient list matters, and that better alternatives should be available wherever possible. That philosophy would ultimately become the foundation for everything that followed.
From Neways to Sisel
Neways continued to grow into a major international network-marketing company, and Tom Mower eventually sold it in 2006. But selling the company didn’t mean selling the mission – Tom went on to establish Sisel International together with his son, Tom Mower Jr., with the intention of continuing the philosophy that had driven his work for decades. Sisel was built around five core values reflected in its name: Science, Innovation, Success, Energy, and Longevity.
The Mower Mission Continues With Sisel
Sisel International’s mission is to create health, wealth and happiness for its distributors and consumers around the world by providing life-giving products and success-oriented opportunities. The company utilises evidence-based, high-performance ingredients developed through its own research, development and manufacturing capabilities – the goal isn’t simply to make another version of an existing product, but to continually research, innovate and improve.
Sisel Safe
One of the most important expressions of the Mower Mission is Sisel Safe – the company’s commitment to avoiding potentially harmful ingredients commonly found in personal-care, skin-care and hair-care products. The philosophy can be summed up simply: remove the bad, replace it with the great.
This isn’t about following trends – it’s about continuing to research. Science changes, and an ingredient considered acceptable years ago may be reconsidered when new research becomes available. The commitment isn’t to defend an ingredient simply because it was used previously; it’s to keep searching for the best ingredients available.
Science Comes First
Research is the compass. Tom Mower has explained that there are ingredients he used years ago that he would no longer use today, because new research has changed his understanding of them – that willingness to continually question, research and improve is fundamental to the Mower Mission.
From Research to the Finished Product
Sisel has its own research, development and manufacturing capabilities, giving the company greater control over ingredients, formulations, quality and production – and the ability to respond quickly when supply chains or international requirements change. A Family Mission
The Mower Mission is also a family legacy. Tom Mower Sr. built the original philosophy, and his son Tom Mower Jr. worked alongside him, becoming instrumental in building Neways and later launching Sisel. The next generation has also become involved – Thomas Mower, Kaden Mower, and Leisel Mower represent the continuation of the family’s involvement in Sisel and the broader Mower Mission. The intention isn’t that every family member must work in the company, but that future generations can choose to participate and contribute to the mission.
Building for the Future
The Mower family’s vision extends beyond a single generation. Sisel has been structured with the intention of creating a company that can endure – one where future generations can continue to contribute to science, innovation, product development, marketing, business growth, health and wellness, and the Mower Mission itself.
Health, Wealth and Happiness
The Mower Mission has always extended beyond the products themselves. Sisel’s mission is to create health, wealth and happiness – helping consumers access products designed around the Mower philosophy, while giving distributors an opportunity to build a business around products they genuinely believe in, sharing their own experience directly with others rather than relying entirely on traditional advertising.
A Personal Connection to the Mission

The Mission Continues
Tom Mower Sr. passed away in 2020, but the mission he began decades earlier continues. What started with an industrial chemist questioning the ingredients in a bottle of shampoo became a lifelong pursuit of safer, more effective products – from Images and Attitudes, to Neways, to Sisel International. The companies changed, the products evolved, and the science continued to develop, but the underlying philosophy remained: inform, educate, empower.
Today, the Mower Mission continues through Sisel International and the Mower family, centred around a simple principle: remove the potentially harmful, replace it with the better. It’s a commitment to science, to innovation, to product safety, and to helping people make more informed choices about their health and the products they use every day. The Mower Mission is not simply the history of a company – it’s a philosophy that has continued across generations, and the journey is far from over.
