Neways: From Kitchen Table Dream to Global Innovation

These days a quick glance at newspaper headlines will be enough to demonstrate how rare it is to find a company of true integrity and vision. However, when you do find such a company, it shines brighter against the dark backdrop of today’s business landscape. That light began shining in 1987, when Tom and Dee Mower decided to take a chance on a fairly simple idea – make safer, superior products, and trust that satisfied customers will spread the word. A few years later Neways Incorporate was born.

Headquartered in Salem, Utah, Neways stayed true to that human yet powerful idea, despite expanding into a global organisation and doing business in 23 countries worldwide. It is also about transition. Growing from a kitchen table business to a debt free multi-million-dollar innovative giant is no small accomplishment. Previously led by the homegrown and multi-talented CEO, Michael Cunningham. Neways found itself perfectly positioned for global innovation in the current market.

Birth of the Mower Mission began with Neways

“I was an industrial chemist making industrial chemical, always researching for new discoveries,” says Tom Mower. “Int the process, I found one in skin cancer research, where they were rubbing ointments on men’s scalps to try and arrest skin cancer. It didn’t work for skin cancer, but hair started to grow. It had nothing to do with the cancer agent, it was actually a cosmetic emulsifier that dissolved the hormone that caused the hair to fall out.”

Dee Mower had success with the product when her own son experienced early baldness, and word got out. “People started knocking on our door,” she says. “From all over the neighbourhood!” adds Tom. He continues, “Some of them were actually network marketers, and wanted to take the product to their companies. it started out that small. Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.”

“They said, ‘Tom start a company!  You’ve got these great products!” At that point, I had only a product for hair loss and shampoo that went with it.”

The Mowers quest for safe and effective products began with the something that simple – shampoo. Recalling it, Tom says: “I was stunned. I had never really looked at the shampoo I was using:  when i read the ingredients, I said, ‘Great Godfrey! That’s what I put in the garage floor cleaner and slaughterhouse degreaser! These ingredients are not only toxic, they are damaging to the membranes of the skin. They can damage organs. how can they make shampoo from this stuff?”

That put me on a mission. I reformatted a shampoo that didn’t use any toxic ingredients, which was tough to do, because the whole industry is designed around these ‘potentially harmful’ ingredients.”

As the mowers’ business grew, so did their desire to root out and improve hazardous personal care products by replacing them with toxic free and safe products. Tom’s next target: wrinkle creams. “I didn’t know anything about wrinkles. I started looking into it and found the same old horror story.” Dee says, “The ingredients were so harmful – we wouldn’t allow our workers down at the plant to get them on their skins.” Tom recalls thinking, “this thing is a nightmare! It’s a bottle of toxins.”

Tom mower began an exhaustive scientific study – a process that was to become one of the hallmarks of his Neways business. “I started doing worldwide research and found a discovery in South America that was an essential oil, from a seed that grew only in the Andes. It had been used for thousands of years by the native population to treat skin ulcers and burns. It caused them to heal faster and left the skin virtually scar-free. The University of Concepcion in Chile was using it to treat burn victims and having tremendous results. In the process of doing clinical studies, they listed any side effect, and they said that in healing burns, wrinkles were being significantly reduced.”

“From there, I came to the realisation that there must be a world of scientific research out there, of powerful, safe, effective products that are not getting to to the marketplace.” Mower had found his calling and it became the driving force of Neways.

Health, Wealth and Happiness with Neways

Neways was a thriving company and for Tom Mower the mission was clear. “There are three famous Chinese characters that stand for Health, Wealth and Happiness. I think that is what it takes to have a well-balanced life and I want that to be the mission of Neways .”

“I want people to be healthy: I can do that by not having harmful products and ingredients – that is phase one. Phase two – how about having products that actually do what they are say they do? Most cosmetics are just a big scam, and with most dietary supplements, you buy a bottle of vitamins and get nothing of any value. The science is out there, and these are products that work. So i not only have safe products but I also have powerful effective products, using ingredients in concentrations in the proper form, new discoveries that nobody else in the world is using. That satisfies Health.”

“This takes us into Wealth. Satisfying health, by itself, is a huge marketing issue. Network marketing companies all make the same mistake, thinking their company is money-driven. Money does drive it, but the only way to sustain success is by having product ingredients. Getting people online through their belief in the products. The products are the foundation for the money and I want the strongest foundation possible.”

Neways added to the Wealth by manufacturing their own product. This in-house control allows the company to use only natural ingredients of the highest quality, all in the most effective combination that for issues of cost other companies cannot match.

“I can also add more to the commission pay-out. I can put more money into it because I manufacture, I don’t pay shareholders because I make it up on volume and loyalty. Nothing breeds loyalty like that kind of scenario. Late 70’s late 80’s
Mower family creates, manufactures and sells industrial chemical products such as laundry product degreasers, lubricants commercial cleaning compound and then sold them to national hotel chains, hospitals and supermarkets.

1987-1989
Mower family shocked by the harmful industrial chemical in their personal care products decides to create person care products that do not contain harmful ingredients. International expansions: Office opened in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Canada and the UK.

1992
Mowers incorporate Neways and add nutritional products to their personal care lines including, Life Enhancer – an ancient Chinese formula from the Ming dynasty, which catapults Neways into the anti-aging and nutritional market.

1994
Skinny Dip enters the market and gains national exposure. Russia Opens (former Soviet Union capturing growth for Neways. Purchases the third largest manufacturing facility in the Southern Hemisphere – New Zealand. Develops a new revolutionary hybrid compensation plan.

1997
Launch of top selling Maximol Solutions creates tremendous growth in the US and around the world. Complete, 250,000ft manufacturing distribution facility in Salem Utah.

1998
Neways, Japan opens and shoots into the top ten Network Marketing companies in the country.
Worldwide recession starts, yet Neways continues to grow by 20% per year. Beings Noni research and later becomes the leader in Hawaiian Noni Juice.

2002
Neways appoint Michael Cunningham as CEO. Company experiences its fastest growth and record sales. Neways becomes the third largest Marketing company in Japan.

2003
Neways completed 85,000 square foot corporate headquarters. Neways breaks ground on state of the art manufacturing and distribution facility at nearly half a million square feet.

2006
Neways was sold in 2006 to Golden Gate Capital. Tom Mower founded Sisel International.  Tom sold Neways in 2006 to capitalize on what he considered some of the most important discoveries in human health and to launch what he deems the best business opportunity in history, Sisel International.

I want to remember my past and know that God has blessed me, and I believe its, so I can help others have a much better life!” But Tom’s greatest blessing is life itself, which hung by a thread in his late 20s when contracted Legionnaires Disease. He lost 80 pounds and was on deaths door.
