Weight loss and toxins? What happens to toxins when you lose weight?

If you are searching for information on weight loss and toxins you may be interested to know that losing weight may actually be toxic to your health, according to a claim by Korean researchers.

“Long-term weight loss can lead to the release of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) into the blood, which might in turn damage the internal organs of the body, claim researchers from the Kyungpook National University, Daegu, in the Republic of Korea. They published their results in the International Journal of Obesity.” Ref

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are stored within fat tissue. When a person starts to lose weight, fat cells are broken down releasing the POPS stored in the tissues into the bloodstream according to the researches.

The researches found blood concentrations of POPs were higher in people who lost weight and lower in people who gained weight. This led them to conclude that weight loss can increase blood concentrations of POPs.

What are POPs – Persistent Organic Pollutants

What are POPs? – Persistent Organic Pollutants

“The most commonly encountered POPs are organochlorine pesticides, such as DDT, industrial chemicals, most notably polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), as well as unintentional by-products of many industrial processes, especially polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF), commonly known as ‘dioxins’.”

According to the World Health Organisation “even to low levels of POPs – can lead to increased cancer risk, reproductive disorders, alteration of the immune system, neurobehavioural impairment, endocrine disruption, genotoxicity and increased birth defects.” Ref.

Other previous studies have shown a potential link there has been a link between weight loss and increase the risk of medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease and dementia. One possible theory is it is due to an increase in blood concentration of POPs.

Weight Loss Benefits

According to Australia experts the benefits far outweigh this risk. Losing weight obviously has health benefits. Well that seems common sense.
If you are overweight or obese, there are many benefits to losing weight. You don’t have to lose all of those extra kilograms to reap the benefits – losing just 5-10 per cent of your body weight can start delivering major health benefits improving sleep and breathing. In addtion it reduces the risk of many types of diseases.

Weight Loss and Toxins – Reducing exposure

Reduce Toxins

If you are still concerned about weighlt and toxins here are 4 ways you can tackle dealing with toxic load when losing weight.

According to the World Health Organisation, farmed salmon is of a particular concert and should be limited. Ref

However, that is not to say other foods such as meat, dairy, grains, fruits, and vegetables are a concern too.

Eat Organic but if you can’t use OrganiCleanse

Organic grown food is free from chemical sprays. So it is an obvious choice however it is more expensive and for many is not within the family food budget. Organi Cleanse is a great product that can be used to wash harmful chemical residues off fruit and vegetables. .

Use a personal care brand free from potentially harmful chemicals

There is no doubt that personal care products have the potential to add toxic load to our bodies. After 26 of skin contacts chemicals in your personal care products reach your bloodstream. Many chemicals used in everyday products are potentially harmful. These chemicals were grandfathered in during a time when we thought the skin was a barrier, not carrier.

Since what you put on your skin goes in (in most cases) it’s very important to be mindful about what you are applying to your skin. That is why I chose Sisel Safe personal care and beauty products, free from potentially harmful chemicals.

Drink filtered water

Purchase a good quality filter. Tap water can be loaded with extra chemical additives including chlorine and other residues. Ideally, you want one that removes as much chemical additive and contaminants as possible.

Consider a supplement that supports toxin removal

Most toxins are fat soluble so they get deposited into fat cells. According to my friend Dr Curt he says your body adds more water in with the fat to protect the body from the toxins. Fat cells loaded with toxins, the ones with the most toxins get burned last.

One supplement I love is Sisel’s body shield. Body Shield helps to promote cellular protection and encourages detoxification (read more). This supplement can go a long way to support the removal of toxins.

At the end of the day it is important to try to reduce you toxic load, from all sources including what you eat, drink, breath, and absorb. Consider all chemicals in and around the home and look at mimising or switching to safer alternatives.
