The skin being the largest organ in the body performs multiple functions these including regulating the body temperature, protecting the body from the harmful effects of the environment, and so on.
While the skin does a lot to protect our organs and perform a range of other functions, it does take a beating, so to speak. The skin is constantly exposed to free radicals, UV radiation and sometimes, harsh weather. The everyday exposure to these elements increases our chances of developing skin disorders such as skin cancer. They also induce premature skin aging.
To understand what really causes our skin to age, we need to look at the factors that play a role in skin aging. These factors are grouped into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic aging also known as chronological aging is a natural degenerative process caused by internal factors such as genetics, hormonal changes and cellular metabolism. It is a gradual process that occurs over a period of time.
As we get older, the skin loses its strength and ability to regenerate and repair. As a result, several things happen:
- Decreased dermal collagen, which leads to dermal thinning and moisture loss
- Decreased melanin production, which leads to skin pigmentation
- General skin atrophy (epidermal and dermal thinning)
- Reduced bone mass, which enhances skin wrinkling and sagging
Generally, intrinsic aging is characterized by dry skin, thin skin, pigmentation, and fine wrinkles. With time, these features worsen and become more pronounced. The wrinkles deepen, the capillary function declines, the skin becomes saggy, the lymph becomes sluggish, hyperpigmentation increases, and the skin becomes more sensitive.
Extrinsic aging is a declination process that is caused by external factors such as air pollution, excessive alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, poor sleep, toxins, chemicals, sun exposure, and climate.
Studies show that UV radiation is the main contributing factor in extrinsic aging. It is also known as photoaging and it occurs more rapidly that intrinsic aging causing the skin to age prematurely.
UV radiation has many negative effects on the skin. For one, it can cause DNA damage, which has been linked to skin cancer (Melanoma). Prolonged exposure to sunshine can also cause severe sunburn especially in individuals who have lighter skin.
Excessive tobacco use and alcohol consumption are also major factors that contribute to premature aging. Which is why you find a 20 something year old who smokes or drinks alcohol excessively looks older than a 30+-year-old who maintains a healthy lifestyle.
Extrinsic aging tends to produce dryness, coarse wrinkles, pigmentation, and elastosis, which are all signs of aging. On the bright side, these effects are reversible.
How to beat the signs of aging
There is a huge range of products and solutions in the market and although many of them guarantee good results, it is good to be cautious. Dermatologists advise people to carefully read the ingredients before buying an anti-aging product.
In addition to using anti-aging products, you can promote your skin health by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and avoiding poor lifestyle habits.
But let’s be honest, our biggest concern when it comes to aging is wrinkling. If there is something that can make you lose confidence fast especially if you are a woman, is the sign of wrinkles.
Women will use just about any anti-wrinkle product in the market to get rid of their wrinkles. And although you cannot get rid of wrinkles forever, at least you can try to delay them by using anti-wrinkle products such as anti-wrinkle capsules.
