Can you boost NAD levels naturally?
The three top contenders are:
- Eating certain foods (the top of the list is milk)
- Keto Diet
- Fasting/Calorie Restriction
Milk is at the top of the list when it comes to foods that boost NAD levels naturally. But is it enough?
“In 2016, the University of Iowa published a study which measured how much of this NAD+ precursor is found in cow’s milk (1). It’s not a high amount versus supplement sources, but is high when compared to most foods.”
However it’s still a long way short .
“Based on an average of 4 unidentified brands of organic milk, the average nicotinamide riboside amount was 1.9 μmol per liter.
The average was 3.9 μmol per liter, across 4 types of milk tested
There are 33.81 ounces in a liter. If you do the math, it means an 8-ounce glass of milk will have 0.92 µmol and for organic, it will be 0.45 µmol.” Ref
It can be determined based on this research the NAD boost from milk is not enough to have an age reversal effect.
“After all the calculations, 8 ounces of conventional milk = 0.23 mg of nicotinamide riboside (and organic milk will have about 50% less).
To put that in perspective, your typical supplement is 250 mg, which is over 1,000 times more than the glass of milk.”
Ref
It can be found other types of foods in tiny amounts. It is likely to be found in foods that contain B3. But it is such a tiny quantity that no one has bothered measuring it.
Since milk was found to be at the top of the list for foods that boost NAD levels naturally, it is not even worth mentioning any other types of foods.
So let’s move onto the next source.
Can you boost NAD Levels Naturally with Ketogenic Diet?
There is evidence to suggest that Ketogenic diet can boost NAD levels.
There is no doubt that the Ketogenic diet can have many health benefits for different conditions and types of people. Including weight loss and weight management.
One study states: “Based on diverse published literature and these initial data we suggest that increased NAD during ketolytic metabolism may be a primary mechanism behind the beneficial effects…. in promoting health and longevity.” Ref
According to another study
“At this time more research is needed to further identify where and when ketogenic therapy increases the NAD+/NADH ratio, and to delineate specific downstream effects.” Ref
So we are back to the same answer to the question can you boost NAD levels naturally? In this instance, it appears it will not be enough to see visible signs of age reversal.
Furthermore, the Keto diet is a very difficult diet to stick with a ratio of 65% fat to 30%, 5 % carbs. A number of foods need to be cut out making it very hard to sustain. Almost all carbohydrates are out. Also, you can really pop into a restaurant and say I will have a Keto meal.
People who start a Keto diet, may feel quite sick due to the high-fat levels.
Can you boost NAD Levels Naturally with Fasting or Calorie Restriction?
That leaves us with fasting and calorie restriction.
According to Dr Ming Huni Zou.
“Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a ketone — that is, a molecule produced by the liver and used as an energy source when glucose is not available. The body produces ketones during fasting or starvation, on low-carb diets, and after prolonged exercise.
We found [that beta-hydroxybutyrate] can delay vascular aging. That’s actually providing a chemical link between calorie restriction and fasting and the anti-aging effect.”
He goes onto to say that “This compound can delay vascular aging through endothelial cells,” Dr. Zou explains, “which line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. It can prevent one type of cell aging called senescence, or cellular aging.” Ref.
Clearly, it has benefits to reverse aging.
“Calorie restriction (CR) extends lifespans in a wide variety of species.
Calorie Restriction induces an increase in the NAD(+)/NADH ratio in cells and results in activation of SIRT1.” Ref
The biggest problems with calorie restriction it’s hard to stick too.
Furthermore, when it comes to fasting Dr. Zou says that “It’s difficult to convince people not to eat for the next 24 hours to increase the concentration of this compound”.
Ref.
Of course not everyone can do it. It is difficult to do.
